about

Drexler’s debut album Handles came about from the composer’s desire to create a body of work that represented him as an artist. With a history of playing in bands, composing for advertising, and collaborating on film, Drexler’s desire was to create a project where he was totally free to create in whatever way the music took him. The album marks a new chapter for him as an artist, one where his creative influences over a lifetime have been transformed into something completely new. This season of new beginnings and creative rebirth is paralleled in the album’s musical material, creating a personal work that captures an honest and raw beauty.

Drexler infuses intimate chamber strings with tender piano tones, ambient synth, minimal percussion, and folky guitars, adding to the instrumentation by manipulating sound using production techniques, delays, and experimenting with acoustic spaces. The album also features field recordings from Drexler’s travels across the globe: the gentle flickering sounds from Lake Kawaguchi in Japan, native birds and burning embers from a countryside campfire in NSW, Australia, and the rattling hum of a London tube. Recorded in small spaces—predominantly in his studio in North West London–Drexler’s work focuses on recording granular sonic details: the hair of the violin bow slowly draped across the bridge, the hammers of the piano hitting the felt above the strings, the textures of shimmering electric guitars, the sounds of a fire engine passing in the distance.

“This album is special to me because it marks a new chapter for me as an artist. Having built a career in composing for film and advertising, it was particularly freeing to write without any direction and purpose, letting the music go on its own journey. Having the space to experiment allowed the music to go to some unexpected and wonderful places. Although "Handles" marks a new beginning for me, it's my lifetime of musical influences, collaborating with old friends, and sound recordings of memories past that helped forge this album.” —Drexler
